MMJC Program FAQs

Read on for important information for incoming MMJC students

How many courses are taken to complete the MMJC program?
The Master of Media in Journalism & Communication is a course-based professional program. There are 12 courses, and an internship milestone to be completed in 12 months.

1st term courses are required:

> 9101 Introduction to Journalism
> 9102 Introduction to Communications
> 9103 Audio and Visual Storytelling Skills
> 9104 The Social Media & Digital Production Dojo
> 9200 Doing Democracy Right or Doing Right by Democracy? Ethics, Critical Theory and the Public Right to Know

1st term courses will also have required technical workshops that must be attended. The timetable you receive prior to the start of the term will have these dates confirmed.

2nd Term course selection permits you to choose up to 3 elective courses. Information & Media Law 9105 is a required course, and you must choose either 9201 or 9202.

3rd term course includes one required course plus one elective, both online and asynchronous.

What assistance is there for the technical portions of the program?
At Orientation, you will meet the Broadcast Technical Services team who manages the production area on the 3rd floor of FNB and works closely with MMJC students to help them with training and technical issues with production equipment. On the MMJC Program page on the Intranet, you will find a section with the FIMS Broadcast Services Policies and Procedures. Review the policies and complete the Equipment Use Quiz. This will need to be completed prior to signing out equipment.

What are my options for elective courses in the second term?
The specific offerings of elective courses for your second term have not been confirmed yet, but here is previous list: Copy Editing, Video Storytelling, Professional Writing, Mastering Strategic Digital Communications & Initiatives, and Beats and Features. You also have access to other FIMS graduate courses identified as FIMS 9XXX. The timetable will provide more information on your electives.

Note: You can choose the required course for the other stream as an elective if you choose to.

What is the internship?
In the final term, you must complete the Internship milestone to graduate. The internship is a minimum 4-week work placement in Summer term where you are supervised by a current professional in the field. You can pursue your own placement, or we can assist you. There will be an Internship Info Session in late September as well as resume and interview prep assistance throughout the year.

What is the attendance policy?
Students are expected to attend all classes in which they are enrolled. As there are no formal written examinations, participation in classes is essential. Students may fail a course if more than two classes are missed. Students should reach out to instructors prior to missing class. See the FIMS Intranet for more details.

What is the grading scale?
80% and above (A)
70-79% inclusive (B)
60-69% inclusive (C)
< 60% fail (F)

What are the Progression/Graduation requirements?
Overall average above 72%

No more than one course in the ā€œCā€ range (60-69%)

No course below 60%
